The entry-level average salary for a psychiatrist is ₹ 1 to ₹ 3.8 Lakh per annum. While the experienced one receives ₹ 17.6 to ₹ 20.3 Lakh per annum.

For instance, the average salary of a consultant psychiatrist in a government organization is ₹ 25.7 Lakhs – ₹ 34.5 Lakhs per year. These are the steps to become a Psychiatrist in the United States:

  1. Earn a Bachelor’s Degree: The first step to becoming a psychiatrist is to earn a bachelor’s degree in health science from a recognized College or University. The degree is usually 4 years. 
  1. Pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT): To be admitted to medical school, applicants must take the MCAT. It evaluates the candidate’s critical thinking abilities and scientific understanding of the field. 
  1. Attend Medical School and obtain a degree: Medical school, usually of 4 years, includes two years of classroom-based education in basic medical subjects. The other two years are focused on practicals in various specialties. Hence, after completion, you can obtain either a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. 
  1. Residency in Psychiatry: Complete 4 years of residency in a hospital or clinic, especially in the state where you intend to practice. During this time, the candidate receives training in areas such as drug dependency, neurology, and psychometrics.
  1. State Medical License: To practice medicine in a state, psychiatrists need to hold a license issued by the medical board. Every state has its own procedures and standards for licensure. Applicants have to take an examination to receive a license to practice medicine.
  2. Certification: The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) offers certification for psychiatrists. Board certification displays your knowledge and skills in the field of psychiatry. It is required in most medical practice settings.
